Spit of land at the Ferry Harbor Hellevoetsluis

Hellevoetsluis has a broad and long history when it comes to military heritage. As a former naval base, many objects were built here with a military function. After the Tramhaven was established for public transportation over water, the resulting spit of land was an ideal place to build a mine warehouse. In addition to this warehouse, two detonator warehouses were built for arming the mines. During World War II, Hellevoetsluis was the home port of several flotillas. Furthermore, the fortress of Hellevoetsluis was part of Stützpunkt XXVIII of the Atlantic Wall. To combat Allied aircraft, gun emplacements (FLAK) were built at four locations in and around the fortress of Hellevoetsluis. One of these emplacements was built on a former detonator warehouse located on the spit of land. An adjacent reinforced building was used as a barracks.

Normally, this spit of land is not accessible to the public. At this location, Kanoclub Hellevoetsluis has its clubhouse and storage for materials. With the cooperation of this club, it is possible to open this location to the public for Bunkerdag (Bunker Day).
