In this artillery bunker of the type 612, a gun was placed (on a mobile gun carriage) with which fire could be released parallel to the coastline. An enemy that landed on the beach along the Haringvliet could be driven off in this way. There was cooperation with more northern positions along the Haringvliet in which identical bunkers have been built. This is the only Ständige bunker of Stützpunkt XXVIII left.
The bunker has an attached machine gun setup (Tobruk) and is almost completely original. The concrete road over which the gun could be driven from the bunker to an open 360° bed is still present. Old photos in the bunker bring back the memory of past times.
History
Fortress Hellevoetsluis was mainly an army base and naval port in recent centuries. Buildings that still remind us of this are the barracks Haerlem, a long coastal battery from 1880, the restored Dutch objects, a powder tower and the barracks in the fortress. From April to October there are various guided tours about the military heritage of Hellevoetsluis. Hellevoetsluis also has beaches, museums, the largest marina in the Netherlands and events such as the Vestingdagen.
The Hellevoetsluis fortress was built in the mid-17th century to strengthen the war and trade port. The fortress was important as a (naval) port until the 19th century. Because the Canal was dug through Voorne around 1830, there was a lively trade and passage to Rotterdam. In addition, Hellevoetsluis had various naval and training institutes and fortress artillery.
