This rare type V143 radar bunker was completed in September 1943 and contained a Mammut radar screen. The antenna cables are still present. The bunker itself is still in very good condition and parts of the camouflage pattern can be seen on the outside. You can find out all about the Stelling WN63 (the group to which this bunker belongs) and how the radar worked.
The IJmuiden harbour required extra protection. The ring of some 1100 bunkers and other fortifications around the town was called the Festung IJmuiden and consisted of a sea front, a land front and a low zone. Evidence of all of these can be found in Wijk aan Zee where over 70 bunkers are (partially) exposed or accessible in the sand.
Please note that access to the bunker is via several stairways and through the dunes and is therefore not suitable for wheelchairs or disabled visitors. The bunker itself is not so dusty.
