Torpedo storage

The ammunition for the Schnellboote, the torpedoes, was stored in a munitions bunker that was specially designed for the purpose. The Germans named this a 'sonderkonstruktion'. The bunker had 2.5 metre thick walls and a 3 metre thick roof made of reinforced concrete. Gigantic concrete blocks were used to close off the two entrances in an emergency. Narrow rails ran along the whole length of the bunker with turntables at certain intervals, used to transport ammunition to Schnellbootbunker 1 to supply the Schnellbote. We can still see this track running out from the main entrance today. The bunker is currently used by bands as a rehearsal space and is therefore nicknamed 'Popbunker'. The original bunker is hardly recognisable inside but visitors are allowed take a peek on Bunkerdag. Traces of the original paintwork are still visible on the outside.
