In the center of Alkmaar, you will find 2 telephone bunkers: one R616 and one R617. The R616 is accessible to the public and is managed by the Alkmaar ’40-’45 Foundation. Since 2017, the museum has been focused on the wartime history of Alkmaar and its surroundings, with the exhibition being renewed every year.
The bunker served as a hub for German telephone traffic between Den Helder-Schagen-Bergen and Haarlem-Amsterdam. It was camouflaged as a residential house. The exterior still partially retains its brick cladding, as well as smeared areas where windows were painted. The bunker contains a fully functional Lüfter HES 1.2 with distribution pipes, equipped with KEV cabinets, a bunker heater, and a bunker bed. Because the bunker was sealed shortly after the war, all doors and armor are still intact.
On Bunker Day, there are 2 historical vehicles from Collection ’39-’45 displayed outside.
