This type R616 telephone bunker can be found in Alkmaar town centre. For years it has stood vacant in a field there.
The bunker was a German telephone hub that facilitated the Den Helder-Schagen-Bergen-Schoorl and Haarlem-Amsterdam connections. You will find a number of original features there, such as a stove, steel doors, embrasures and an air filtration system. A particularly distinctive feature is the bunker's periscope aperture. Although it was part of the standard construction of this bunker type, the addition of a periscope had little use in a town centre. On the exterior of the bunker you can still see how it used to be camouflaged as a house; some of the brickwork is still present.
Volunteers from the bunker museum will give guided tours through this small bunker throughout Bunkerdag. There are also two small exhibitions which tell you more about the city's defence.
