Well hidden beneath the Sports Hall Oude Land lies another remarkable bunker from the Cold War era. This Emergency Government Post from the 1960s remained a big secret for a long time. In case “the Bomb” would fall, this bunker would provide shelter for the mayor, several officials, the police, fire brigade, and the Public Health Service for a maximum of one to two weeks.
The purpose of the Emergency Government Post was to continue the daily governance of the municipality. In doing so, the Emergency Government Post was in contact with Civil Defense and other posts across the country. The actual emergency response was coordinated by Civil Defense.
Over the years, the bunker has been used by various parties such as the Red Cross, and it still has an almost fully operational technical room. Several original items are still present, such as a telephone exchange and a sand filtration system.
