On Kornwerderzand, close to the Afsluitdijk, some kilometres out to sea from the Frisian coast, we find the famous casemates (fortified gun emplacements). It is the only place in Europe at which the German offensive in May 1940 was hindered. A limited force of just 225 Dutch soldiers managed to hold back the 15000 advancing German troops. Museum volunteers are available to explain all about this important time in local history.
You can visit 2 casemates and 1 bunker at this location on Bunkerdag, including a kitchen and an anti-aircraft depot. All areas are equipped much as they were during the war. The original details and the story behind this impressive location make a visit very much worthwhile, not easily forgotten.
Walk with one of the guided tours to hear the stories of Kornwerderzand. The tour takes about an hour and starts at 11.30, 13.00 and 14.00. Registration is not possible, but first served.
Maximum of 15 participants per tour.
