During Bunker Day, Stichting Erfgoed Den Helder organizes a tour at the bunkers by Willemsoord. What many people don’t know is that Den Helder is the most bombed city in the Netherlands during World War II. With 156 bombings, Den Helder was reduced to rubble, many residents left and Den Helder became a ghost town. Den Helder with its naval port was an important target for all warring parties.
In the May Days of 1940 for the Germans, later for the Allies. One of the main targets was the Rijkswerf on Willemsoord. There were therefore many bunkers in which the people who worked there hid during the bombings. There are now only a few bunkers left.
During the tour you will visit all remaining bunkers and you will hear all about the Rijkswerf, the bunkers and the people who worked at Willemsoord. One of these bunkers will be specially opened during Bunkerdag.
The specific times and registration link for the tour will follow on this page.
