In the Netherlands there are many people for whom war is never far away: people who experienced the Second World War, soldiers and veterans, but also those who had to flee to survive. They live every day with the consequences of war, persecution and violence. These often traumatic experiences have a major impact on their lives and on those around them.
Texts with illustrations by Dido Drachman show the different ways in which war and trauma can affect people, generations and societies. A special feature are five mini-documentaries by filmmaker Sandra Parry with personal stories of war victims and their loved ones. These videos can also be seen in the other memorial centers in the Netherlands.
As part of the national theme year ‘Living with War’, the National Monument Oranjehotel organizes in collaboration with ARQ Knowledge Center War, Prosecution and Violence, the exhibition: Living with War. Traces in generations and society.
The exhibition can be seen from 14 February to 31 December 2023.
